Motorbike, Hat Yai, Thailand, 1981Photograph by Steve Raymer
A soggy street in Hat Yai, Thailand, dissolves into streaks in this motion-blurred photo of an umbrella-shrouded couple on a motorbike.
The Sukhothai kingdom, considered the forerunner of the modern Thai nation, was founded in the 13th century when Thai-speaking peoples migrated from southeast China to the River Yom, 230 miles (370 kilometers) north of Bangkok.

Clarence River Boat, Australia, 1996
Photograph by Medford Taylor
Two fishermen navigate the fog-fringed Clarence River near the town of Grafton in New South Wales, Australia. Settlement along the 245-mile-long (394-kilometer-long) Clarence, began near Grafton in 1832 after a convict who had escaped into the area won his freedom by leading timber barons to copious cedar stands along the river's banks.

Elephant Seal Cuddle, South Georgia Island, 1998Photograph by Maria Stenzel
Using a piece of vegetation as a makeshift pillow, a pair of elephant seals cuddle on the beach.
Elephant seals cannot move easily on land, because of their girth. The animals spend 90 percent of their time underwater.

A couple dances at a nightclub in Marais, Paris.
Established as a grand 17th century Parisian neighborhood, Marais reclaimed its chic character in the 20th century, emerging as a quirky, fashionable place to see and be seen.

Mount Merapi Steam, Java, 1971
Photograph by Dean Conger
Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia. Its most recent eruption began in 1992 and ended in 2002. Because it erupts so often, the flanks of the volcano are often covered in ash, creating fertile soil that attracts farmers despite the obvious hazards.
(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Java—Eden in Transition," January 1971, National Geographic magazine)

Safely situated in a shark cage, photographer Bill Curtsinger and his assistant snap photos of gray reef sharks flitting through the waters of the Marshall Islands off Rongelap Atoll. Emory Kristof, a leader in the field of remotely operated and robot cameras, captured this image with a shark-proof robot camera. Photograph by Emory Kristof

It takes more than high-tech wizardry to capture deep-ocean creatures on film. Dragged alongside the unmanned submersible SeaRover, liquid tuna and chum attracted this rosy rockfish, swimming by a basket sea star in the waters of Monterey Bay, California.

With the help of high-intensity lighting, high-resolution cameras, and the submersible Alvin, Kristof and his crew captured dramatic imagery in the dark, superheated depths of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. At these nadirs, chemosynthesis—the thermal and chemical energy given off by deep-sea vents—gives life to creatures like the eelpout fish and tubeworms pictured here.
